History
2003 – Appointment of a Committee for initial studies regarding the implementation of Portal de Periódicos UFSC and mapping of existing journals at the Institution.
2004 – Development of a data form for journal evaluation. Analysis, by means of the data form, of the 27 journals published by the University.
2006 – Meeting with UFSC editors at the I Simpósio de Comunicação Científica.
2007 – Creation of the Portal de Periódicos by the Departamento de Ciência da Informação (CIN/CED). Training workshops were held with editors and scholarship holders, providing advice on the migration of printed and electronic journals to the Sistema Eletrônico de Editoração de Revistas (SEER/OJS). SEER implementation team at UFSC. Start of the implementation of the Awstats statistical system for the Portal.
2008 – In January, the Awstats statistical system was implemented for the Portal and all its journals. Responsible for implementation: Káthia Jucá. Awstats counts downloads, accesses, views, visitors, which countries accessed the data, among other metrics. Migration process of 52 journals to the Portal. At the II Simpósio de Comunicação Científica, the Portal creation date was formalized – May 5, 2008 – and a meeting was held with UFSC editors.
2009 – The Portal implementation team completes its work and delivers an activity report to the new team, along with continuity recommendations for the Portal. On May 26, the Portal de Periódicos comes under the coordination of the Biblioteca Universitária, under the responsibility of librarians Narcisa de Fátima Amboni and Andréa Figueiredo Leão Grants. It becomes governed by the Guidelines created and approved by the Editorial Board. Starting in September, new members join the Portal’s Editorial Board. The Incubadora de Periódicos UFSC was created, coordinated by the Departamento de Ciência da Informação (CIN/CED). Organization of the I Ciclo de Debates Periódicos UFSC, a professional training event emphasizing experience sharing and exchange.
2010 – The implementation process and assignment of Digital Object Identifier (DOI) handles to documents begin. To this end, the Portal establishes the DOI Guidelines. Holding of two training workshops in the journal manager and editorial workflow modules. Organization of the I Encontro Nacional de Usuários do SEER. A total of 1,245 DOIs were assigned.
2011 – Development of the e-book “Sistema eletrônico de editoração de revista (SEER): processo editorial”, a partnership between UFSC and UNISUL. Organization of the I Seminário Anual CrossRef – Brasil (May).
2012 – Revision of Guidelines, approved in a meeting of the Advisory and Deliberative Council on August 29, 2012. In May, the BU promoted the I Fórum de editores do Portal Periódicos UFSC: da construção à visibilidade, featuring special participation by Professor Benedito Barraviera. Issued 1,299 DOIs for journal articles. In June, the Encontro de Editores na Área de Letras e Linguística da UFSC was organized.
2013 – The Portal establishes partnerships with the Associação Brasileira de Editores Científicos (ABEC) and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Creation of the Portal de Periódicos UFSC Fanpage and development of the Content Creation Guide: internal procedures. Content curation on the Portal’s social media channels: Fanpage, Twitter, and Slideshare. In February, promoted a lecture on content quality in publications with Professor Piotr Trzesniak (photographs).
2014 – Guidelines update. The Portal comes under the coordination of librarian Lúcia da Silveira. Hiring of 30 scholarship holders distributed among the journals, SeTIC, and the Laboratório de Periódicos. Advisory services on XML tagging for journals included in SciELO. Publication, through AGECOM, of stories on the Portal’s journals to increase visibility within the university community. The Portal’s Fanpage reaches 5,000 likes. Development of the first Annual Activity Report of the Portal de Periódicos, incorporated into the BU Annual Report.
2015 – SEER/OJS update (version 2.4.5). Public access to the Minutes of meetings of the Portal de Periódicos Advisory and Deliberative Council. Identification of services provided by the Portal to users. Implementation of frequently asked questions and the ticketing system, a remote communication channel to serve editors, reviewers, authors, among other users. From February to December 2015, handled 803 tickets via the system. Creation of the event website for Ciclo de Debates Periódicos UFSC. Organization of the IV Ciclo de Debates Periódicos UFSC. Project to document the implementation history of Portal de Periódicos UFSC to preserve institutional memory. Other activities carried out are available in the Annual Report.
2016 – In January, SEER/OJS was updated (version 2.4.7.1). Update of the Portal header. Creation of favorite icons for the pages of the 44 journals. Update of the Guidelines, approved by the University Council. Institutionalization of Portal de Periódicos da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina as a service of the Biblioteca Universitária (Resolution No. 18/2016/CUn, May 31, 2016). In July, the Portal comes under the coordination of librarian Juliana Aparecida Gulka (Ordinance No. 1745/2016/GR, July 26, 2016). Inclusion of journals in Google Scholar (profile) to facilitate monitoring alternative metrics. Development of the new Portal de Periódicos website in compliance with federal government requirements. Ranked as the second-best journal portal in the country by Webometrics. In September, the new Bylaws of the Biblioteca Universitária were approved, linking the Divisão Portal de Periódicos to the Coordenação de Tecnologia, Conteúdos Digitais e Inovação. 2017 – In January, the Portal moves to its own dedicated room, physically separating from the Serviço de Periódicos. In February, SEER/OJS was updated (version 2.4.8.1). The Portal is again coordinated by librarian Lúcia da Silveira (Ordinance No. 339/2017GR, February 8, 2017). Launch of the new website following federal government standards. In April, promotes the “I Workshop de Editoração Científica”. In May, organizes the “V Ciclo de Debates Periódicos UFSC”. In July, carries out the migration of the SEER/OJS system to a new server. In August, publishes the Ethical Conduct and Procedures Recommendations document. Indexing of all journals in the PKP Index completed. In August, assumes responsibility for updating the indexing of all Portal journals in DOAJ. In October, promotes the Workshop on the Sistema Eletrônico de Editoração de Revistas (SEER), aimed at editorial teams of journals hosted on Portal de Periódicos UFSC. 2018 – In February, OJS was updated to version 2.4.8.3. In April, promotes an OJS workshop for editorial teams of journals hosted on Portal de Periódicos UFSC. In May, holds the VI Ciclo de Debates Periódicos UFSC and I Encontro Nacional de Portais de Periódicos, commemorative events celebrating 10 years of Portal de Periódicos UFSC. Launch of the Portal’s new visual identity. In August and September, hosts two students from FURG for mandatory internship supervision in Library Science. 2019 – Development of the timeline for adjustments and subsequent migration to OJS 3. In-person workshop on OJS 2.4.8.3 conducted to train new members of editorial teams. Supervision of mandatory internship in Library Science, totaling 210 practical hours. Commencement of migration for the journal Texto & Contexto Enfermagem. Mapping of journals within the UFSC domain located outside Portal de Periódicos or Laboratório de Periódicos. Manual syntax cleanup of DOI in legacy metadata fields and reallocation to the proper field. Update of Google Scholar profiles for all journals. The Portal assumed the service of metadata review and indexing in the LILACS database. Creation, application, and/or refinement of visual identity for nine journals. 2020 – Starting March 16, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team adopted remote work (home office). In July, launched the book “Gestão editorial de periódicos científicos: tendências e boas práticas”. Formalization of the SimilarityCheck anti-plagiarism service. In October, migration to version 3.2.1.1 of OJS. Training on editorial workflow in OJS 3, held online for the first time using the RNP conference room, with 39 participants. Standardization of DOI syntax with the implementation of the new format starting in 2021. Delivered training on journal indexing at the request of Portal de Periódicos da UFRPE. 2021 – Portal de Periódicos continued its operations and support services remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several adjustments and bug fixes were carried out in OJS, along with guidance provided to editors and journal users. In October, the Portal co-hosted the I Fórum de Editores Científicos UFSC e Udesc alongside Portal de Periódicos da Udesc. Total of 934 tickets resolved during the year. 2022 – The Portal began the year continuing remote support until April, when in-person operations resumed. OJS was updated from version 3.2.1 to version 3.2.1.4. A total of 1,353 DOIs were assigned, and metadata for new articles was verified. A total of 631 tickets were resolved via the ticketing system; other statistics and activities are detailed in the Annual Report.
2023 – Portal de Periódicos da UFSC recorded over 4.5 million accesses and 2.2 million downloads, updated Open Journal Systems (OJS) to version 3.3.0.16, and implemented new system plug-ins. A total of 1,254 DOIs were assigned. Ten journals were indexed in Diadorim, one in Redalyc, and two are awaiting indexing results in databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. The team participated in events and training focused on enhancing editorial practices and adopting new open science guidelines, aiming for the continuous improvement of services offered by the Portal. 2024 – Portal de Periódicos da UFSC issued the Normative – Gender Identity: editorial policy for scientific journals. Recorded over 4.2 million accesses and 2.4 million downloads. Assigned 1,254 DOIs. Completed the update of Open Journal Systems (OJS) to version 3.3.0.16 and implemented new plugins to optimize the editorial workflow. Enabled the adoption of an accessible article template, reducing reading barriers from article publication onward. Resumed discussions to formalize a 20-hour workload for editors. Conducted training sessions and other initiatives to strengthen the professionalization and sustainability of UFSC scientific journals. Annual Report.
2025 – Portal de Periódicos da UFSC recorded over 3.5 million accesses and 2 million downloads. A total of 1,530 DOIs were assigned, and 1,176 articles underwent technical review. Normative Ordinance No. 517/2025/GR was published, formalizing nominal workload assignment for journal editors (up to 20 hours for editor-in-chief and up to 5 hours for associate editor). The University Council approved Normative Resolution No. 212/2025/CUn, updating the criteria for entry, permanence, and discontinuation of journals in Portal and Laboratório de Periódicos UFSC. The team organized the VII Ciclo de Debates Periódicos UFSC, held online, addressing topics such as OJS 3.5, altmetrics, peer review, LGPD, and Artificial Intelligence, bringing together 576 attendees. The Portal de Periódicos UFSC team counts on the Advisory and Deliberative Council (CCD) and the management team handling demands from editors of UFSC scientific journals. Thus, the record of previous administrations preserves the history of all collaborators involved in the management of the Portal as a means of preserving institutional memory.
